Over the next several weeks we will bring you quick tips to help you learn about how to improve your website’s natural page ranking. These tips are designed to educate and empower you to keep your site current with the latest in Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

First, a precursor to the tips: Always keep in mind the number one rule in SEO…Whatever you do on your website, do it for the user first. The biggest mistake we see people make when executing any type of SEO strategy is to “skirt” the system and do things for SEO reasons only as opposed to it being for the site visitor. These tips will help your search engine ranking but they are also “visitor friendly”, meaning they help those visiting your site.
#1 Choosing the Right Keywords
When Search Engines crawl through the content of your website they gather a lot of information. When they are done they determine a “theme” for every individual page of your site and an overall “theme” for your website. This is important to know because search engines define your theme based on the individual words and word combinations on each page.
So, in order to plan a successful web strategy you must think about your keywords per page. What keywords are important to my business and what keywords are people using to search for my product/service? Some of these you can guess, but the real proof is using a keyword tool that tells you the average traffic per month for specific keywords. You might be surprised by the results and learn that you should actually refine your keyword!
There are dozens of free keyword traffic tools out there on the web, but we recommend Google Keyword Tool. Again, this will tell you the average traffic per month and the last month for a certain keyword term.
Once you have done your keyword research on traffic for certain terms, your goal is to have your site text have the keywords in an optimum percentage range per month. To do this you should methodically identify a primary and secondary keyword phrase for every page of your site.
Please note that the primary keyword phrase should be different for every page of your site! However, your secondary keyword phrase on all internal pages should be the same as the primary keyword phrase for your home page. Also, your company name should never be a primary keyword phrase. If someone is looking for your company online they will find you.
That’s about enough to digest in this one tip. The key again is that people who are searching for your product/service can find you, and the key to doing that is to have your site rich with the actual keywords that the majority of people are using to find your product/service. Example: If you sell golf clubs detailing that you are a provider of XYZ Golf Clubs.
